With today’s 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) NFL trade deadline looming, the San Francisco 49ers acquired defensive end Chase Young from the Washington Commanders in exchange for a third-round draft pick.

Despite bolstering a defensive front with the likes of All-Pro defensive end Nick Bosa and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, the 49ers have generated very little pass rush on opposing, quarterbacks this season.

But with the addition of Young, the 49ers are hoping to get back into the habit of wrecking havoc; which would take some pressure off the secondary.

Originally drafted second overall in the 2020 NFL Draft by Washington, Young has 14 career sacks, including five this season.

Young has been consistent in getting into the backfield this year with 14 quarterback hits and five tackle for losses; so playing opposite of fellow Ohio State teammate Nick Bosa has the opportunity to put even more pressure on opposing offensive lines.

With a superstar-laced defensive front featuring Bosa, Hargrave, Arik Armstead, Randy Gregory, and now Chase Young, the 49ers defensive have more than enough options to try and disrupt the trenches.

I honestly felt the 49ers may have tried to trade for Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson before the deadline to help solidify their secondary; but the move for Chase Young makes a lot of sense.

Defensive ends Clelin Ferrell and Drake Jackson both haven’t been able to compliment Bosa as edge rushers this year, but Young’s talent and skill set could potentially change all that and open up more opportunities of success for the 49ers defense.

With the 49ers having a bye for Week 9, Chase Young will have plenty of time to get acclimated with the defensive scheme and get comfortable with his new teammates.
